“Playing the Impeachment Card”

Mission Control wrote this mid-afternoon:

By William Rivers Pitt

The abandonment of Congressional oversight is a lot of the reason we are in such a sorry state, and that abandonment was authored by Republicans who were stupid enough and opportunistic enough to trust that Bush and his people would lead them to the promised land of a permanent majority. This won’t be forgotten by November.

Beyond that, few people are going to rise in response again to the waving of the bloody shirt of September 11. The Cunningham and Abramoff scandals continue to grow, chopping down Republicans left and right. The GOP’s usual electoral strengths - morality and security - are gone, and the Republican base is abandoning them. The cupboard is just about empty.

What’s left? Vote for us, or else we’ll be held accountable! That’s just funny.

Deconstructing Pelosi

Mission Control wrote this mid-afternoon:

By Ken Werner

Nancy PelosiTo promise George Bush and Dick Cheney immunity from impeachment not only paints the Democratic Party as uncaring about violations of our laws but also sends a message to Bush and Cheney that no matter what illegal actions they have already performed or might perform between now and 2008, they are at liberty to continue to violate human rights and will not be prosecuted. And voters will incorrectly assume (as in 2004) that there are no major differences between the two dominant political parties and will subconsciously react to whoever spins the most believable rhetoric.

Nancy Pelosi should immediately retract her promise to Bush and Cheney of immunity from impeachment and should promise the American people, and the world, that the Republican culture of corruption will not be tolerated, and those found guilty of “high crimes and misdemeanors” will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of our laws.

The Rove Strategy

Mission Control wrote this terribly early in the morning:

By Jesse Jackson

There they go again. The Republican National Committee, the right-wing noise machine and their spear carriers in the mainstream media, have been in attack mode over the last few weeks. This time their target is Rep. John Conyers, the distinguished senior Democrat who will become chairman of the House Judiciary Committee if Democrats win the House back this fall.

With the president and the DeLay Congress about as popular as big oil CEOs, the RNC is desperate to demonize Democrats. So they cooked up a campaign claiming that if Democrats win the House, Conyers is geared up to impeach the president. This threat, they suggest, will rouse the disaffected Republican base and bring them out to vote in large numbers.

The mainstream media fell for the bait. The ever-cooperative Tim Russert grilled Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi, suggesting that Conyers should take down the Web site explaining his resolution providing for a bipartisan committee to investigate the administration and to recommend whether or not impeachment hearings should begin. (Pelosi, to her credit, didn’t fold. She said the Democrats would investigate the handling of intelligence leading up to the war, the corruption in the war and other administration misdeeds. She reminded Russert that checks and balances were the essence of the Constitution.)

But Democrats were spooked. Their excitable inside-the-Beltway strategists began worrying that the Democratic left would blow the election by alienating voters in swing districts. Pelosi then had her spokesperson announce that ‘’impeachment wasn’t in the cards'’ if Democrats took back the House.

It is hard to sort out which is more pathetic: the RNC for hyping this gambit, the press for falling for it or Democratic leaders for cowering at the first sign of a dustup.

Karl Rove Talking Points: Fear Impeachment & John Conyers

Mission Control wrote this at around evening time:

Conservative commentator Carl Limbacher was caught lying to a group of young republicans during a speech in Midland, Texas. He said that Democratic Representative John Conyers held a “mock impeachment” of George Bush and suggested that Conyers and other Democrats have set out a vendetta against the president in wartime.

Lies. Lies. Lies. Fear. Fear. Fear.

John Conyers has not held a mock impeachment, whatever that is. He has organized a few important forums to discuss the possible crimes committed by the Bush Administration in the run up to the Iraq War. He also released a summary of his staff’s work called “The Constitution In Crisis” which sets the framework for an investigation into accusations that Bush and his team lied to Congress, which is a felony offense, and misled the American people to attack and occupy an oil-rich nation that posed no immediate threat to the United States of America.

Let’s talk about this in simple terms so that it is easy to explain to others. The Republican (mis)information machine works in a top down manner. At the top is Karl Rove. The middle contains right-wing hacks such as Limbacher, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and arguably the majority of corporate-controlled mainstream media. At the bottom are the loyal republican base, including so-called Christian Conservatives, Conservative Moderates and people without strong opinions on politics.

Here is how Karl Rove does it:

Step 1: Rove dreams up divisive issues, i.e. issues that separate Americans from each other instead of bringing them together. Hopefully they are issues that Republicans poorly manage like national security, health care, civil rights or the environment so that their weaknesses become to appear as their strengths. Three highly successful “dividers” are: the Right to Choose, Immigration and Gay Rights. Rove knows these issues will be contentious offering a chance to set the debate on these topics.

Step 2: Rove spins these issues in a wrapper of hatred, cynicism, racism and bigotry as to motivate people by their inner-most emotional urges rather than their rational minds.

Step 3: Rove adds lots of lies, slanderous statements and misleading characterizations so that it looks like he knows what he is talking about.

Step 4: The right-wing echo machine takes over to incredible effect because of it’s mass reach into a near 100% share of AM radio market, entire news organizations such as Fox News (and others) as well as substantial conservative influence at the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and, of course, “actual” right-leaning papers like the Washington Times.

Step 4b: Accuse all of the media as being “liberally-biased” so no one catches on.

Step 5: Have a stiff drink, shoot some crack, hang out with a gay hooker or do something else you enjoy like commit treason or drop some chemicals on a baby because you just created an opposite reality where your programs seem reasonable to people who are misinformed. Write the words “winning is everything” on the cover of your notebook.

Step 6: Repeat

This business about impeachment is a great example. Despite the fact that a fear-filled Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has come out of the shadows in defiance of her liberal base AGAINST impeachment, and, that John Conyers is seeking to explain his intentions on investigating the president by pandering to fears of being anti-patriotic, most people will nevertheless end up thinking that the Democrats are crazed lunatics on a vendetta to impeach the president and by doing so in a time of “war” will compromise the security of the nation.

All of this pretty much because Karl Rove thinks it will help the Republicans in the November election — and damn the consequences to our nation, ourselves and our children.

Conyers: “No Rush to Impeachment”

Mission Control wrote this in the early evening:

By Rep. John Conyers, Jr.

As Republicans have become increasingly nervous about whether they will be able to maintain control of the House in the midterm elections, they have resorted to the straw-man strategy of identifying a parade of horrors to come if Democrats gain the majority. Among these is the assertion that I, as the new chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, would immediately begin impeachment proceedings against President Bush.

I will not do that. I readily admit that I have been quite vigorous, if not relentless, in questioning the administration. The allegations I have raised are grave, serious, well known, and based on reliable media reports and the accounts of former administration officials.

Why We Need Impeachment

Mission Control wrote this in the early afternoon:

By Bill C. Davis

It’s not personal. It’s not about how much we are embarrassed by or don’t like Bush. It has nothing to do with individual animosity and everything to do with collective power. When exit polls don’t match the official tally it doesn’t automatically mean that the time honored system of exit polls is suddenly unreliable, or that, as we were told, spouses were afraid to admit in front of each other who they voted for. It means something darker and more challenging. The American people did not take the challenge – we did what the coup expected we would do and we have been doing it ever since – until now.

We are at the “until now” moment. Democratic party leaders are uncomfortable talking about it. They think strategy. Impeachment is not a strategy. It’s a citizen action – a national correction – a collective redemption – an honest recall. It may happen city by city – state by state – but the body politic has the right, need, obligation to impeach.

California Congressional Hopeful Pushes for Impeachment

Pelosi Forfeits the Constitution

Mission Control wrote this late at night:

Editor’s Note: Some may find these comments a bit harsh. But, I am posting them because I agree with them 1000%. It is really time to look at what is actually happening with the Democrats, and when you get over the shock of how bad things are and how inept and morally void our leaders in Washington are, then we can try to find some remedy with whatever rights we have left. And even if it takes 100 years, we must take responsibilty for America as citizens, fight to reclaim it, and put it in the hands of enlightened leaders so that our children can forever prosper. Hats off to Mr. Goldman for having the guts to tell it like it is!

By Mark Goldman

With House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi telling us that Democrats will not try to impeach Bush now or later, we have an admission that the rule of law is now dead in America. At least it’s dead with Nancy Pelosi. She wants to appease us with legislative perks. Her strategy: It doesn’t matter that we’ve lost the Constitution, we’ll make it up to you with a better drug prescription plan. (She smiles… Applause!)

I don’t see any real signs of life anywhere else in Congress either. Apparently we are to accept and believe that…

1) Bush and his cabal did not commit impeachable offenses, or
2) We have entered a new chapter in America where some people are now above the law. In fact, what she is telling us is that the Constitution doesn’t matter any more, that administrations rule rather than serve, and from now on some government officials will be accountable to no one… ever.

Bush’s impeachment should have been well under way by now. The problem is that there has been a political coup, and the government of the United States has been overthrown.

This is not hyperbole. If you think such a pronouncement is over the top, it’s only because you are uninformed and not paying attention.

White House Caught Lying About the Depth of NSA Spy Program

Mission Control wrote this in the early evening:

Bush Lying

Despite months of describing the warrantless domestic spying program as “international” and “targeted to terrorists,” it has emerged that the government is illegally spying on tens of millions of Americans. USAToday has the scoop:

By Leslie Cauley, USAToday

The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of the arrangement told USA TODAY.

The NSA program reaches into homes and businesses across the nation by amassing information about the calls of ordinary Americans — most of whom aren’t suspected of any crime. This program does not involve the NSA listening to or recording conversations. But the spy agency is using the data to analyze calling patterns in an effort to detect terrorist activity, sources said in separate interviews.

Democrats (yes, Democrats) May Block Impeachment Effort in California

Mission Control wrote this in the early evening:

By Miriam Raftery

LA MESA, CALIFORNIA — An impeachment resolution introduced into the California Legislature by Assemblyman Paul Koretz (D-West Hollywood) may be blocked from reaching the floor, RAW STORY has learned.

“I think there is a shot,” Koretz said when asked what odds Assembly Joint Resolution 39 has of winning passage. “The question is whether the leadership will let it move. There are a lot of bipartisan issues we’re trying to work on this year,” he added. (Text of the resolution.)

Democrats control both houses of the California Legislature. But leaders may be wary of losing Republican support for budget and tax measures, which require a two-thirds majority for passage under California law, one legislative insider told RAW STORY.

The measure calls on Congress to investigate potentially impeachable offenses committed by President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

Editor’s Note: We should all pause to take note that in one of the country’s most progressive states, California, where Democrats control both the House and Senate, we still have trouble getting an impeachment resolution through the system and on to the House of Representatives. This problem gets bigger by the day. We, as citizens, must not stop until we have held those who have committed crimes accountable and begun to restore our democracy. We all must take action immediately!

How One Moderate Republican Can Save the Nation

Mission Control wrote this mid-afternoon:

By Rob Kall

It looks like there will be a major sea change in congress this fall, as Bush’s ratings drag Republicans down with the decider in chief. A new Ipsos poll shows that over 60% of Republicans are not satisfied that with the job that Republicans in congress are doing.

But there are a few things moderate Republicans with integrity can do to neutralize the competition they face from democratic candidates picked by centrists and DLC influenced leaders in the DSCC (Democratic Senate Campaign Committee) and the DCCC (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.) You see, these democrats look just like republicans. They waffle on most issues, may oppose women’s rights and are way too close to corporations, taking lots of PAC money and failing to take stands on issues that regulate or weaken corporatist positions. These are the Democratic candidates who are unwilling to even stand for censure of George Bush, let alone commit to supporting the impeachment motion that 36 congressional reps have already signed on to.

Hate Politics: Conservative Press Gets Nervous and Divides America

Mission Control wrote this in the early afternoon:

Even though Nancy Pelosi, like most of the spineless Democrats in Congress and the Senate, has not come forward to publicly support either a resolution for Censure or for Impeachment, the Conservative media is already acting as if she has in order to drum up support for their side. This is classic Republican divisive politics, it is also happening with issues such as imigration and gay rights, and it is meant to divide this country. When will the GOP learn that we cannot solve our problems with hate?

Also, when will the Democrats learn that they should be a voice? If they are going to get tagged as an opposition party anyway, they should become one! In the meantime, they can know that signs in the media like this most certainly means the Republicans are getting desparate.

Another clear example is Bob Dole’s lies about the Democrats’ Congressional Record and that they will put “terrorism on the back burner.” Do the Republicans still really believe these fools when they say that their fellow Americans sympathize with the terrorists? It is just so stupid. Wake up people, you are BEING LIED TO!

Bush Challenges Over 750 Laws with “Signing Statements”

Mission Control wrote this in the early afternoon:

By Charlie Savage

President Bush has quietly claimed the authority to disobey more than 750 laws enacted since he took office, asserting that he has the power to set aside any statute passed by Congress when it conflicts with his interpretation of the Constitution.

Among the laws Bush said he can ignore are military rules and regulations, affirmative-action provisions, requirements that Congress be told about immigration services problems, ‘’whistle-blower” protections for nuclear regulatory officials, and safeguards against political interference in federally funded research.
