“The Case for Impeachment” … A Must Read

Mission Control wrote this in the early evening:

By Frank J. Ranelli

Considering the Bush administration’s assault on our civil rights, the Constitution itself, American principles as we know it and rampant republican cronyism, there is no shortage of books to read that outline the worst Presidency in American history. In fact, there is a literal litany of them to read and depress one’s self over it all. The problem with such a plethora to pick from is you can’t read them all and many of them are either too dry, histrionic or too full of legal blather to bother with.

Enter David Lindorff and Barbara Olshansky and their book, The Case for Impeachment: The Legal Argument for Removing President George W. Bush from Office. Mr. Lindorff is a thirty-year veteran of journalism and Ms. Olshansky, an attorney, is the Director Counsel for The Center for Constitutional Rights. Together they achieve what few other books can on this subject can, mainly a lucid argument for removing the Bush cartel without boring the reader to death or burying them in lawyer lingo. Blending a mixture of just enough pragmatic history, clear-cut evidence and easy-to-understand legal language, the authors present a damaging case that clocks in under 275 pages, including the index and ample supporting documents.

A Democratic House?

Mission Control wrote this in the early evening:

By Michael Barone

Rep. John Conyers, slated to be chairman of Judiciary, has been muting his earlier calls for the impeachment of Bush, but he can be expected to move in that direction when he takes the gavel. There are few moderate Democrats on Judiciary, and Conyers could conceivably mobilize a majority to bring an impeachment resolution to the floor. Yet a Democratic Judiciary Committee is likely to be on Bush’s side on immigration, and could produce a guest-worker and legalization bill.

Of course, it’s not certain that there will be a Democratic House next year. Republicans will frame the election as a referendum on who can keep the nation safe, and they’ll point out that most House Democrats voted against the terrorist interrogation and National Security Agency surveillance bills. And Republicans have a superior turnout drive. Stay tuned.

Students at USI Call for Impeachment

Mission Control wrote this in the early afternoon:

by Leah Barr

“Your rights are being taken away! Apathy is not the answer!”
Protestors kept a loud vigil in USI’s free speech zone throughout Tuesday. From 8 a.m. until evening, USI students and Evansville residents of diverse backgrounds and faiths raised a united voice with chants, drumbeats and signs.

“Jesus would be here,” said Kelly Adams, 27. “He rebelled against leaders who pushed false faith.”

The group collected over 400 signatures on their petition calling for the impeachment of President Bush.

The group varied in size, ranging from 15 up to 40 strong as bystanders joined in over the course of the day.

“We’re trying to raise attention to the fact that our President has been lying to us,” said USI student Michael Bruns.

Bruns said the group was confined to a small area of campus and he finds it ironic that a public school has such a small space to allow for public expression.

The protestors’ grievances with President Bush ranged from concern over privacy and personal freedoms to women’s rights and the War on Terror.

“Bush says he’s pro-life but then kills Afghan children,” Adams said.

Campus security officers did not break up the group’s efforts, but made them remove sticks from their handheld signs to ensure that the protest would remain peaceful. Bruns said security chief Barry Hart was “pretty understanding” and did what he could to keep the group able to safely protest.

“I think anyone who’s against the killing of innocent people should be able to stand up and say something, Bruns said.

“He’s breaking laws and he’s going against the Constitution that it was supposed to be his job to uphold.”

New York Town Board Votes to Impeach Bush

Mission Control wrote this around lunchtime:

NEW PALTZ, NY — Impeach Bush? Yes, says the New Paltz town board.

The board voted 5-0 last week in favor of a resolution calling for the impeachment of the president. Grounds for impeachment listed in the resolution were taken from a list of 13 legal violations compiled by groups who also support Bush’s impeachment.

“I’d say it’s an unfortunate time in our history that we have to do this,” Councilman Jim Bacon said.

Murtha Says Impeachment IS an Option

Mission Control wrote this around lunchtime:

By Linda Milazzo

On CSPAN’s Roundtable Conversation this past Friday, Pennsylvania Congressman Rep. John Murtha stated that the United States would NOT be well served if a new majority Democratic House attempted to impeach George W. Bush. He also stated that Democratic House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi holds the same opinion. Said Murtha, “I think Nancy’s taken the same position. She’s said over and over again let’s not talk about impeachment. Let’s try to solve the problems of this country.”

Then why not start by removing the nation’s principal problem, George W. Bush? If Mrs. Pelosi and Mr. Murtha want “to solve the problems of this country,” removing George Bush would be a superb place to start. Especially since his presidency is the de facto creation of the idiot Drs. Frankenstein who currently occupy our Congress. Those who have fashioned this President into an overpowered, overindulged, overruling monster.

Odd that they’ve named this the “do nothing” Congress when they’ve obviously done way too much.

To those who attribute the re-creation of this Presidency to Mr. Cheney and Mr. Rove, I respond in the strongest Rumsfeldian terms, POPPYCOCK! Had the spineless Congress not voluntarily relinquished its power, chunky Rove and chubby Cheney would be nothing more than a pair of flabby men whom any adult could kick the living crap out of.

But no, rather than controlling the sibilant ‘S’, baby-talk Bush, both houses of Congress collapsed into a theatre of the absurd. Coerced, feckless and dedicated to their own demise, they created the unitary executive which severely diminished their power. And since only fools relinquish their power, this is a Congress of Fools. On both sides of the aisle.

Pelosi’s spineless anti-impeachment position is nothing new. Neither is her disabuse of international anti-Bush/anti-American sentiment. Pelosi is so insulated from world opinion that Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez actually shocked her when he publicly demeaned George Bush during his recent visit to the United Nations. True Chavez was a bit over-the-top, but at least his weapons were ‘words’, and not the torture, guns, bombs, depleted uranium, and body burning phosphorous that are the weapons of choice for George Bush. Nonetheless, Pelosi deemed Chavez “a thug” and vehemently defended George Bush.
